COVID-19 Service Modification for Huron Women’s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services
The Shelter is committed to ensuring women and their families have access to support, services and advocacy, in accordance with recommendations and protocols needed to support the health and safety of residents and staff. We recognize that for the duration of the pandemic, gender based violence is likely to elevate and access to support throughout the community may be disrupted. We are working in collaboration with our partners to strengthen service coordination through the pandemic.
Our shelter is open and offering residential support to women at high risk because of gender based violence, as well as the 24-hour help line available to anyone in need. All intakes, risk assessment, safety planning, advocacy and transitional support will be offered via telephone, video conferencing or email. Counselling, groups, and children’s programming are currently offered via telephone or video conferencing and are facilitated by staff working from home. Regular visits by community partners or any non-essential visitor has been postponed through the duration of the pandemic. Cleaning and disinfecting procedures have increased, and appropriate measures to ensure safe food handling are being implemented.
Second Stage Housing (SSH) Sites
All second stage sites are closed to visitors, however we continue to support residents via email, phone and video conferencing. Additional signage indicating current protocols has been posted.
Service during COVID-19
We continue to provide critical services to women and their families through virtual intake, risk assessment, safety planning, system navigation and advocacy. Where risk is low, we will help a woman plan her next steps accessing safe supports, virtual supports, appropriate referrals and provision of available resources. If upon intake a woman is considered high risk and in need of residential supports, we are committed to doing all we can to support her safely in a sheltered space.
